Being True to Your Story

Everyone has his own specific vocation or mission in life; everyone must carry out a concrete assignment that demands fulfillment. Therein he cannot be replaced, nor can his life be repeated, thus, everyone's task is unique as his specific opportunity to implement it.

Being a leader is one of the toughest things someone can do in their life. All of us are leaders in our own way. You may be a teacher, parent, small business owner, or a role model. What I have seen over the years is the potential in people; the sad thing is people will chase the money. The reality is that if you sharpen your skill set, it will pay off in the long run and money will follow you. You can’t say “give me the money now” or “I want this” just because you have a license, or think you’re overqualified. It’s about showing what your worth compared to what you think you're worth. It was said your degree is only worth 15%, the other 85% is your passion and motivation. There is a story in the Bible about an individual that was given one talent, and he took his talent and multiplied it into 10; another individual took his talent, and hid it and did not multiply it. I think, as leaders, our job is to take the one talent we have and multiply it by 100. Steve Jobs once said it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert in one thing. I see people say over and over they what to build a legacy to leave behind, whether it be to build a great skyscraper, a family, or a good home. I have seen numerous times that when it’s time to work hard and learn from trial and error, most people will abandon their passion, values, or dream. I love the quote from Dave Ramsey that states that you must "grow yourself, grow team, and grow your profit." I think as an individual, you must find your purpose or passion. Once you figure out your purpose or purpose, you must combine it with your skill set, find your sweet spot, step into your role, and stay right there ready to work hard. There are going to be some tough times along the way, but be careful not to abandon your passion, and go back to your comfort zone of eating M&Ms or sitting on the couch doing nothing. This is not the answer, just like chasing the dollar is not the answer. A job is just a job, but a passion or career is something no amount of money can replace. Having passion is about setting the example for your kids not be a “yes person.” It’s about not settling and being in mediocrity. Don't lower your values for those around you. I found, as a small business owner, I'm starting to learn a lot very quickly about how to hire people. I look for their potential, their values, their emotional resilience, but, most of all, I look if they want to improve themselves. Victor Frankel stated that money is the byproduct of doing something right, with integrity, by working hard and honestly. You may not get rich from your passion, but you will have the satisfaction in creating a life which brings you contentment. Success is what you choose it to be, and it’s how you want to leave your legacy. It’s about being true to your story, and never giving up.
